Five for Friday, September 18

This week, my daughter celebrated her 21st birthday. Does this make me feel old? A little bit. Though the fact that I became a puppy granny as a consequence of her birthday celebration has more to do with that than her age. (Welcome to the family, Deacon!)

Here is this week’s Five for Friday: five links to get you through the weekend. I’ll be back on Monday with your regular dose of wit and charm. Until then–happy weekend!

  1. With the 2016 presidential campaign already well underway, there’s been a lot of conversation about wealth inequality. But just to bring that conversation down to reality, here’s a list of 20 Things the Poor Do Every Day.  Income inequality isn’t just a problem to talk about during debate season–it’s a matter of life and death.
  2. On a related note, a new study shows that the gender pay gap hasn’t improved in 7 years.
  3. Also celebrating a birthday this past week: Wild author Cheryl Strayed. Here are 15 inspirational quotes from her work. (My favorite: “I didn’t know where I was going until I got there.” Story of my life.)
  4. Thinking about a movie this weekend? It appears that M. Night Shyamalan has redeemed himself with The Visit.
  5. And finally, the first day of fall is upon us–next Wednesday marks the official change of season. Kick back and celebrate the return of cooler weather by making yourself a delicious caramel apple martini.
