Five for Friday, August 21

Well, today’s the day—we’ll be moving Andrew into his dorm room this afternoon and coming back home as empty nesters this evening. I’m trying to focus on the positive (I’m sending my kid to college, he’s there on full scholarship, he’s healthy and wicked smart and ready for this big adventure), but the truth is that I’ve never needed a Five for Friday more than I do today.

So, here are five amusing, uplifting and edifying links to kick off the weekend. See you Monday . . . if I’m done crying by then.

  1. Stephen Colbert thinks women should be in charge of everything. I always liked that guy.
  1. Here’s an excellent reminder of why it’s important to be gentle with ourselves: How My Mom’s Self-Hate Taught Me a Vital Lesson about Self-Love.
  1. This open letter To the Teenage Girls at the Swimming Pool brought me to tears. (Happy tears, that is.)
  1. Even though summer is winding down, there’s still time to plant a fall garden. (I’m planning to put in a new crop of carrots this weekend—they love cooler weather.)
  1. Addicted to your smart phone? Then you’ll probably recognize some of these Things That Will Happen If I Don’t Take My Phone Out Right Now.
