New Directions

Refresh and Refocus

If you follow She Dwells on Facebook, you may have read the story  of Trudy Smith. She’s a 102-year-old woman who took up painting at  85, after the death of her husband. Or the story of Yasuko Fujii, who graduated college at 80. Or perhaps the story of Doris Carnevali, the 97-year-old author of a blog called Engaging with Aging.

I shared those stories because they resonated with me when I read them. At various times, I too have needed to focus my energy in a new direction. I’ve needed something to get excited about–and wondered whether it was too late to try something I’d never done before.

When I started writing She Dwells in Possibility four years ago this month, I had only one goal in mind: to give myself a new project. I created this blog from scratch, learning as I went. That required developing some skills I didn’t know I would need. I closed my eyes and clicked Submit with some trepidation more than once, afraid I would break the blog I’d worked so hard on.

I’ve learned a lot in those four years, tried different things and refined my focus several times. I finally settled on the idea of helping women through big moments of transition. Whether that means going back to college or developing an exercise routine,  I try to create content that helps people make positive changes and stay focused on their goals.

To celebrate my fourth blogaversary, I’ve also done a refresh here at She Dwells. You might notice that the color scheme is a little different than it has been in the past. (Coral is my favorite color, so I decided to run with it.) If you follow me on Instagram, you may also have noticed that I’ve started doing some microblogging there. (In other words, I sometimes write longish posts on topics relevant to this blog.) You’ll always hear about new posts to She Dwells if you follow me on Instagram–or you can follow the #dwellinpossibility hashtag to check in whenever you want.

This refresh has been a good opportunity for me to think about what I want this blog to be: a place on the Internet where women can gain confidence in themselves and feel empowered to move ahead with their goals. A peaceful place–which is why I don’t feature flashy ads or do a podcast.  Above all, a supportive place. Because, in the end, all I want to know about myself is that I did my best to help.

It’s up to you to decide what you need help with. And you might have to close your eyes before you take a big leap. But honestly, it doesn’t matter–the important thing is that you’re doing it.
